Drug Rehab Lifeline
Living without Drugs and Alcohol
The Challenge....
Scientists and medical experts now consider the
disease of addiction to be chronic and relapsing.
For drug and alcohol treatment programs overall,
only 20% of addicts completing the program remain
drug and alcohol
free.
Why?
There are 2 primary aspects to relapse: behavioral and physiological.
Behavioral Relapse: returning to old patterns of behavior, (thinking,
feeling, reactions). If left unchecked, these reactions lead to physiological
relapse, as the newly recovering individual instinctively relates "relief'
from life's pain to using drugs and alcohol, rather than "going to any
lengths", for sobriety in their early stages.
Physiological Relapse: the actual use of chemicals (drugs or alcohol) after a period of abstinence, recovery planning.
An effective treatment program must cover detoxification, enforced abstinence, education on all aspects of addiction, coaching on life skills, and life planning. There are programs achieving as high as 80% success rate, but most fall short in addressing all areas thoroughly enough for such success.
