When to Intervene
When Should You Intervene?
Remember, addiction is chronic, progressive, but also treatable.
If
the addict is not beating his habit, he is getting worse.
Under the ongoing influence
of drugs or alcohol, few seek
treatment on their own.
Friends and family of the addict should take an important
step before
confronting the addict. The addict's behavior has
usually angered and hurt others. They
often blame or belittle the
addict or, conversely, make excuses for him and
cover up his behavior. The first step in handling him is to address
your own behavior to remove the negative emotions and enabling actions. This helps
to break the vicious cycle where attempts to handle the addict create more
stress that the addict once again takes drugs to alleviate.
After a short period of neither helping nor attacking the alcoholic, family and friends are in a far better position to sit down with him and discuss treatment. This should take place as soon as possible. If people recognize a problem, the problem is serious enough for intervention.
